Tokubei is deeply in love with a prostitute named Ohatsu. However, his uncle Kyuemon wants him to marry his niece and bribes Tokubei's stepmother. After learning about this, Tokubei takes the money back from his stepmother in order to return it. However, he learns about his friend Kuheji's financial difficulty and lends the money to him. On a repayment due date, Kuheji not only refuses to return the money but also claims that he has never borrowed the money.
