The story of a girl is one that is a complex, fun-filled ride of emotional turmoil. Nothing stays constant and everything is almost a struggle. Riddled with conflicting needs, the story of a girl is one that is as hard to tell, as it is to hear. The month of October welcomes to the stages of Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre not one but two revealing tales of several women caught in a time in their lives facing tough choices and tougher circumstances.
In all its seriousness, the two plays are actually portrayed with a light-hearted, comedic approach as Megat Sharizal, the director of both plays puts it, “It’s something that we can laugh about but at the same time it makes us think and reflect on ourselves.” Kisah Gadis is the vehicle used to bring together Mangli and Gadis Jalan Burmah. Both plays have seen the light of stage before but this is the first time they collide for a truly ingenious and undoubtedly entertaining double bill showcase.
Mangli is the tale of two friends, Idayu Sa’ayah and Aris Mat Tam, brought back into each other’s lives after years of absence only for Idayu to find herself having to deal with Aris’ deep-seated emotional problems that years of pain have shaped. Idayu and Aris will be played by Ashraf Zain and Tuan Faisal.
Gadis Jalan Burmah, on the other hand, is an eye-opening look into the life of a 42-year old unmarried woman. Filled with anger, anxiety and self-inflicted pressure, Kartini Shuib contemplates her choices but, at the same time, is haunted by her past mistakes with men. This monologue will be performed by Sherry Abdullah. Mark a day on your calendars anytime between the 22 October through to 26 October and make a date with Kisah Gadis, a double bill performance for double the bang for your buck.
