The Nutcracker Ballet

Preview | Posted on 28 August 2008 by farhana

Unless if you’d been living under a rock for a century, you might be familiar of The Nutcracker as one of the most celebrated fairytales in the world. It’s a symbol of childhood joy and innocence, with some trippy imagination; reproduced countless times, to the extent that even Barbie’s done it. It’s ballet adaptations are especially magical – with graceful twirls, small feet movements, beautifully coordinated dance routines and sugar plum fairies.

Just to help you remember, The Nutcracker revolves around Clara after she is presented with a nutcracker for Christmas. Her brother then gets jealous and breaks it, but that’s redundant because he subsequently gets it repaired. Anyway, Clara starts getting chased by mice at midnight, and then the Nutcracker comes to life to lead a band of soldiers to defend Clara against the Mouse King and his mice. Eventually the Mouse King gets stabbed, and the Nutcracker is transformed into a prince. He then takes Clara to a land of dancing snowflakes and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

This month, Dance Space presents their rendition of The Nutcracker, as choreographed by Steve Goh, who incidentally won four BOH Cameronian Awards last year alone - you know you’re in good hands. The performance will consist of an ensemble of 160 dancers, along with vibrant costumes, stunning backdrops and of course, spectacular choreography, which should be more than enough to leave you breathless and awe-struck.
