Death Race

Review | Posted on 26 August 2008 by farhana

Death Race has everything you need to give yourself a nice testosterone jolt. The movie is set in a time when America’s overcrowded prison population becomes fodder for televised entertainment. Prisoners get to join a Death Race, where there are no rules, the cars are pimped beyond recognition and killing your opponent is more necessary than a lap pit stop. So this make the movie the perfect (ahem) vehicle for Jason Statham, playing the part of Jensen Ames, to do what Statham usually does in his movies. He smirks, he makes wise cracks, he romances the girl, he swears, followed by many ultra violent scenes loaded with explosions and people who have irked Statham dying.

There are distractions in this movie, such as dialogue and a faint semblance of a plot commenting about our society’s insatiable hunger for entertainment through voyeurism. These things are nothing more but palate cleansers in between seeing alpha men trying to up each other in being bad ass. Natalie Martinez and Tyrese Gibson fulfil the quotient for romance and “bromance” respectively. Martinez is Statham’s hot sexy navigator and Gibson is the token minority guy who throws in smart-alec quips and whose life is ultimately in jeopardy. The movie delivers every blood-stained promise of being a big, loud, explosive guy flick. In case you don’t know, this movie is actually a remake of Roger Corman’s cult 1975 flick, Death Race 2000 that had a young Sylvester Stallone in it.

Cast Jason Statham, Natalie Martinex, Tyrese Gibson Director Paul WS Anderson Runtime 87 mins Opens 21 August
