The Curious Residency Part 1: After Ours

Preview | Posted on 01 August 2008 by sookmei

Not one, not two, but three plays will be staged as part of The Curious Residency. The main goal here is to introduce new names into the performing arts scene and certainly, the three plays are directed by upcoming directors like Helena Foo, Mark Beau de Silva and Chris Ling.

The three plays to be performed during the course of The Curious Residency are all rather different from each other but the one connecting thread is they deal with that awkward but exciting transition into adulthood. The first of the three plays, After Our’s, will debut on 21 August and is directed by Helena Foo and hers is comedic play that deals with the relationships, romance and conflict of several couples from different walks of life.

This is described to be an edgy play with the focus on the troubled conversations the couples have post-coital. While the racy subject matter of sex on stage already ignites curiosity, it is merely a backdrop for the emotional issues of intimacy, vulnerability, heartache and confusion that every couple goes through. The dialogue is quick and the wit, sharp; it should prove to be a modern play that is easy to relate with. If the plot sounds familiar, it’s because it was based on the 2007 low-budget flick After Sex which was directed by Eric Amadio and starred Mila Kunis and Jane Seymour.

This version stars young actors like Nick Davis, George Bull, Alia Nabil, Claudia Low (yep, our Editorial Assistant), Lesedi Halahala and Joylynn Teh. In any case, we’re curious to see how they deal with the mature content. The second and third editions of The Curious Residency will debut in September – look out for them.
