Queens of Noize

Sick of boys getting all the indie cred? Turn the beat around when Queens of Noize heats up the decks at Zeta Bar this August. In all honesty, the hoity-toity bar at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur seems like an odd choice for the Queens.

Comprising of two DJs, Mairead Nash and Tabitha Denholm, these girls are (in)famous in London, especially in the city’s hipster scene. Think of them as the female version of our LapSap and Twilight Actiongirl nights combined. Both are former hosts of MTV UK’s NME Chart Show, ensuring that they know a thing or two about what’s hot and bubbling under in the music scene. They’ve traveled the world, spinning in festivals like Carling Weekend and Roskilde Festival to name but a few. But it is their links to London’s music scene that makes the girls so coveted.

Rumoured to have inspired Pete Doherty to name his band Babyshambles, Nash is also said to have inspired songs like “Mairead” by Von Bondies, “No Good Time” by Graham Coxon and “Golden Touch” by Razorlight. Their main claim to fame however, is a night called Smash & Grab at the London club, Punk. Similar to Steve Aoki’s Cinespace nights, the Queens host the night and play music from genres like indie rock, pop, disco, electro and a mish-mash of whatever they fancy. People like Mika, The Arctic Monkeys, Mark Ronson, Agyness Deyn and Lily Allen have all been spotted grooving to their selections. As you can tell, it’s one hot night if not for the music, for the celeb-gawking.

The theme for their sets at Zeta Bar is Glam ‘80s, and we are told to expect a cheesy good time with songs like “Footloose”, “Like A Virgin” … well you get the point. But if the girls are as unpredictable as people say they are, they might just shake things up and play something totally different.
