Zee Avi LIVE in KL: Reviewed!
It was a night to remember for the 2,000 (source: The Star) adoring fans who descended on KL Live last Saturday to hear local-homegirl-done-good Zee Avi perform an eagerly anticipated homecoming concert that sold out in a record two-and-a-half days.
Instead of the usual exuberant guitar rifts and pulsating electronic beats we've come to associate with the venue over these past few months (especially following major rock concerts like Saosin and Placebo, and international dance acts like 2manyDJs), KL Live adopted a mellower spirit to match Zee Avi's equally intoxicating, soulful voice that seemed to transfix her audience in a dreamlike rapture.

A low-key, stripped down acoustic set featuring the Miri-born singer/songwriter on the guitar, ukulele and vocals, accompanied only by drums and double bass on stage, saw her confidently helm the show with unmistakable style and wit, pausing between songs to engage in cheerful banter with the audience. Fans couldn't seem to contain themselves either, as enthusiastic cries of "I love you, Zee Avi!" and - most notably - "Awak comel la" (You're cute) were heard emanating from the crowd throughout, much to her amusement.

Songs performed included most tracks from her self-titled debut album, such as popular hits like "Honey Bee", "Bitter Heart", "First of the Gang to Die" and of course, the quintessentially Malaysian track and crowd favourite, "Kantoi". In addition, she also sang a few covers, adding her own unique twist to Interpol's "Slow Hands" and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Date with the Night".

While it came as no surprise to discover her legions of fans here, it was so surprising to witness everyone in the audience reciting the lyrics to her songs almost word-for-word, that it made this writer feel rather inadequate for not knowing the lyrics to any of her songs except the opening lines to "Kantoi"!

Overall, with full audience participation and an impressive set from Zee Avi and her band, it was no doubt a good show for all the die-hard fans in attendance. I'm not sure if she made enough of an impression to make me a huge fan though, because the show seemed a little too short - clocking in at slightly over 60 minutes - and personally, I felt the organisers could have given the venue (and the fans) a more intimate atmosphere by making it a sit-down event a la MTV Unplugged. But even so, I still can't stress enough that Zee Avi is incredibly talented, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, the epitome of MALAYSIA BOLEH!

can this even be called a review?
Although a short one, this is a good review nonetheless. Just a correction, that huge thingy is a double bass, not a cello.
Hi Anon, thank you for pointing that out! The correction has been made on the post.
