Buying into the Blogosphere
The musician-turned-technopreneur, Hardesh Singh (The Wknd, The Fairly Current Show, PopIN) is now dabbling in news aggregation. PopWire is dedicated to "finding the best bits of relevant news of the internets, by the internets, for the internets". Basically, it trawls blogs for interesting stuff, and distributes its findings through Twitter and Facebook. "The idea that journalism needs to be produced in a professionally-run news organisation in order for it to be useful is no longer true," Hardesh asserts. "Take a look at our links on any given day. You will be amazed by the range and quality of content being created - almost all by non-professionals."
What about veracity? "The onus is on bloggers to be able to defend their output," Hardesh says. "Our role is to create a valuable and informative channel - a marketplace of ideas and opinions." And, in a marketplace, one is allowed to haggle - or decide not buy something. Of course, pickiness is a prerequisite. "There needs to be an editorial process to separate the signals from the noise. And the blogosphere is a very noisy place."
PopWire, is currently edited by writer Grace Chin, and was developed with support from the Five Arts Centre. It's got a website; better yet, follow it on Twitter.
