Valentine's Day Review

Friday, 12/02/10 - 16:58PM Filed in Film by zedeck | Views: 1323 | Comments: 0

This year's February is not just a month of prosperity; it is also the month of love. This in mind, you may be considering Valentine’s Day (perhaps the most literal festive-tie-in movie title ever) for your Valentine’s outing.

Valentine’s Day is all about Valentine’s Day, of course. The movie revolves around the lives of couples living in Los Angeles. We have the old married couple (played by Hector Elizondo and Shirley Maclaine); the constantly busy, independent woman (Jessica Biel) and the busy, career-driven man (Jamie Foxx); the "perfect" couple (Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba); the best friend (Jennifer Garner); the young lovers (Emma Roberts and Carter Jenkins); and many, many more.

Each of these relationships goes through phases in love, familiar to anyone who's seen rom-coms: the joyful start, the little problems in between, the sudden realisation that changes the mood from happy to sad, the apology and repenting -- and then, back to the joyful start, all over again.

With so many big names, I'd hoped that the film would transcend the usual romantic-comedy shtick -- but, to my dismay, it was nothing but an Americanised version of Richard Curtis's Love Actually, with  the occasion transposed from Christmas to V-Day.

All in all, it's a very average movie, with an average (and very predictable) story. Definitely not a must-watch, but for those who enjoy feeling mushy over the same kind of movies, Valentine’s Day is another one for you to add in your list.

Director  Garry Marshall Cast Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts Runtime 125 mins Opens 11 February 2010
