Case 39 Preview

Friday, 15/01/10 - 12:22PM Filed in Film by huishan | Views: 1049 | Comments: 0

Renee Zellweger in a horror movie? We all know her from her famed role as Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones’ Diary and Cold Mountain (both which won her Academy awards), but we never imagined her in anything of this genre. In this movie, the Oscar-winning actress plays the role of a social worker, Emily Jenkins, who tries to rescue a child from being murdered by her parents.

Being an experienced social worker, who has dealt with various cases, she thinks nothing else can surprise her, until she meets this child. Ten-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Farland) seems sweet-natured at first, although she does have a mysterious, brooding side to her, but Emily discovers a dark secret when she decides to care for her until she locates a suitable family. Lillith is not as innocent as she seems and Emily (or anyone who comes into contact with Lillith) loses her rational mind whilst dealing with this case.

Case 39 is German director Christian Alvart’s first Hollywood film. In Case 39, Alvart used elements of psychology to titillate the viewers’ senses and keep them at the edges of their seats. He worked with Academy-award winning cinematographer, Hagen Bogdanski (an expert in horror film production), to create the mood using colour coordination and special effects. The images, gory and horrifying, resulted in the film being rated R in the United States.
