18@8: 1Malaysia, Beyond the Canvas Preview

Wednesday, 02/12/09 - 10:58AM Filed in The Arts by yangching | Views: 1430 | Comments: 0

There is one thing that is sure about Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak's, 1Malaysia concept: very few people know what it really means. That's de rigueur for political slogans, of course - and it is up to us, as Malaysian citizens, to make head or tail of the phrase. If our take doesn't match up to what the government actually wants, well, not our fault, kan?

Here's another attempt at figuring out Najib's platitude. 1Malaysia, Beyond the Canvas - featuring artists like Anurendra Jegadeva, Nor Azizan Paiman, Liew Kung Yu and Mun Kao - zeroes in on "the importance of public transport for all, regardless of race and religion". Considering that the KL transport grid doesn't work (to put it kindly), we think this angle could result in some fairly edgy stuff.

What do you wish you had more of as a child?
Pocket money! I used to get only 20sen back in school.
Respect from my parents. I am my own person!
I wish my parents listened to me, instead of keeping to the idea that "children should be seen and not heard"
Attention! My siblings took it away from me. Grrr!
Freedom. My parents never let me go out with my friends.
Brand new clothes, not hand-me-downs that were ill-fitting!
Maturity to impress and annoy the adults with.
Time! Everything happened so quickly and I miss those carefree days.
Toys, gadgets and the latest computer games, because we kids were competitive about things like that.
I certainly wish I heard less of the phrase, "When I was your age..."
