Online Gets Offline
In July, a video posing the question, “Is social media a fad?” went viral. Produced by Socialnomics09, the hard-hitting vid was just a simple presentation of eye-opening facts. For example, Facebook reached 100 million users in less than 9 months; if it were a country it would be the fourth largest. Social media has overtaken porn as the number one Internet activity. Ashton Kutcher and Ellen Degeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire population of Ireland, Norway and Panama!
As the vid concludes, “social media isn’t a fad but a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.” If you want to learn how to speak its language, may we suggest joining Social Media Club KL (SMCKL)? Founded by Carolyn Chan (@thechannelc), Ben Israel (@ben_israel), Rachel Foong (@redsheep) and Lim Yung-Hui (@zhiQ), SMCKL held their first meet on 17 September, with the aim of gatherings every third Thursday of the month.
Their inaugural meet included talks from Pete Teo (whose project 15Malaysia benefited from social media) and Chris Brogan, author of the New York Times best-seller Trust Agents. In October, SMCKL featured companies which have embraced social media as part of the business. For more info on the next SMCKL meet, follow them on Twitter: @SMCkl.
