Green Is In
When the annual Rainforest World Music Festival rolls around, music lovers rejoice. Taking place 10–12 July, the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubong fills once again with thousands of loyal fans taking a quick break in the lush Borneo jungle.
Whether it’s to participate in musical workshops during the day or just lay back and enjoy the evening concerts, the Rainforest World Music Festival is the place to be. This year’s festival will also feature an encore performance by hot local fusion music band AkashA. The band redefines Indian music by mixing Indian percussion with guitar, making them a joy to watch live. We caught up with the band's bass guitarist, Greg Henderson, for a quick chat about their debut album Into… Akasha and their plans for this year’s festival:
How’s the album going?
It’s been overwhelming. We’re not signed to a distributor so we’re doing everything ourselves – selling them at gigs, etc. We’ve sold almost the entire first batch of 2,000 CDs but we’re making a new batch. The new CD will include bonus tracks. There are DVDs coming out too and it looks fantastic. It’s a live performance of six old songs and two new songs. Both CD and DVD will come out at the end of May in time for the Rainforest World Music Festival.
AkashA played to rave reviews at the Rainforest World Music Festival 2008. How was that for you guys?
I didn’t play with them at RWMF 2008 because I only joined them after the festival but I heard it was a fantastic show.
What can we expect from AkashA this year?
Double of what you got last year! Our performance is much tighter and much more exciting. We’ve done quite a number of performances so you can expect more momentum and strength.
When you’re not performing, what else are you looking forward to at this year’s RWMF?
Getting together with other talents and we’re all in one place. It’s a learning experience. Hopefully, we’ll connect with a whole new range of fans while we’re playing there.
