Hipster Runoff
Last year, two of the craziest parties came courtesy of Steve Aoki and Scottish dance-punk band Shitdisco. They stormed into KL and packed Zouk KL from corner to corner, creating moshers and crowd-surfers out of clubbers, transforming the nightclub into a rock concert. So when the news was announced that Future presents Dim Mak will bring the two acts together for one night, all bets are off! They're not the only headliners worth getting excited about; joining them are DJs Stretch Armstrong, Pase Rock and local boys Twilight Actiongirl and LapSap. Aoki makes an impression everywhere he goes with his stage and head-banging antics. The same can be said about Shitdisco. Infamous for throwing raucous parties in living rooms (resulting in their eviction) and unconventional venues like an abandoned factory, Shitdisco performances are completely uninhibited, and really capture the energy of being young—as in, “I can only do this when I'm young.” It's that insane. If you're a follower of music blogs, then you would have heard of Pase Rock and his remixes. Fusing electro with hip hop, old soul and R&B, this Brooklyn native has been the DJ of choice for stars like Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Lindsay Lohan and magazines like Urb and Vibe. Stretch Armstrong, named after that flexible action figure from the '70s, has over 20 years of DJ-ing experience to his moniker. Similar to Pase Rock, he mixes electro, house and hip hop into one floor-filling set. Though that might sound different from what Shitdisco has to offer, rest assured that all acts live up to that Dim Mak quality. What, you've never heard of Dim Mak? A quick lesson then: Dim Mak is the independent label founded by Steve Aoki that has signed some of today's most exciting acts like Battles, Gossip, MSTRKRFT, Bloc Party, Mystery Jets, Klaxons and yes, Shitdisco, making it an influential label in contemporary times. Future will build on what Dim Mak is about—and it's not just about music, it's about the total Dim Mak lifestyle. Expect Dim Mak merchandise to be sold at the event, like their T-shirts for example! Oh, we almost forgot to mention that Mark “the cobrasnake” Hunter will be flown down to. Try not to get your skinnies in a twist over this. Future presents Dim Mak happens on 30 May, 7pm at Bukit Kiara Indoor Arena. Tickets are priced at RM88 (at the door) and RM68 (pre-sale).
