Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End

Review | Posted on 01 June 2007 by denise

When it comes to en epic cinematic saga like Pirates Of The Caribbean, nobody really follows the plot. As long as the seas get rough with swashbuckling and Jack and Will’s pretty faces show up ever so often, then the audience is happy. But if you—insistent geek that you are—must know what happens in Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End, here’s a Cliff Notes summary for you.

Following up from where they left off, we find heroes Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly) allied with one-time enemy Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush)—yeah, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” and all that. We see the trio and their “loyal” crew reunited in Singapore (we love what the pirates have done with the place!) where they attempt to steal navigational maps to World’s End from Captain Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fatt).

After a rather chaotic adventure, they sail off to World’s End to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow, who is trapped in a schizophrenic warp in Davy Jones’s locker. The crew eventually rescue the scraggly rascal, and the two captains temporarily set aside animosity to focus on a looming threat—Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), who now possesses the heart of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), has begun purging piracy with the assistance of Jones and the Flying Dutchman.

In this time of crisis, the Brethren Of The Coast assemble and the nine pirate lords (who together make for a decent Benetton ad) unite to discuss their impending fate. You can bet your bottle of Bacardi rum that that the titanic showdown delivers enough climatic action sequences and emotional drama to keep you at the edge of your seat.

Gore Verbinski has put his USD200 million budget to good use in At World’s End which boasts stunning hi-tech visual effects and awe-inspiring ship-to-ship battles. But while the second film merely served as a plot filler, At World’s End delves deeper into the emotional stories of key characters—the increasing humanity in Davy Jones, Will and Elizabeth’s somewhat facetious love affair and the true motives of Voodoo witch, Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris).

Director Gore Verbinski Cast Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly Runtime 167 minutes Opens 24 May
