Sunburst Music Festival is finally over and done with, but drama ensues. News has been circulating on the internet that N.E.R.D were allegedly being detained in KL by Malaysian authorities and that their passports were confiscated after their Sunburst performance on Saturday night. Later, reports surfaced that N.E.R.D had cancelled their Jakarta, 22 March concert date. Trust us, we're just as perplexed as you guys are.

Well here's the skinny according reports in The Jakarta Globe and Bernama. Apparently, the Ministry of Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage did not approve the permits for N.E.R.D to perform at Sunburst, deeming their music offensive.  And although the group was allowed to enter the country, they were not allowed to perform. After their performance, immigration authorities held members of N.E.R.D. for brief questioning but deny confiscating their passports. Fearing a similar episode in Jakarta, the group decided to cancel their appearance in Indonesia. Pineapple Concerts will now have to answer to the Ministry for this little mishap.

How will this effect the future of international concerts happening in our neck of the woods? Let's just say Beyonce will have a few more friends in her corner after this.

UPDATED of 24 Mar:

Here's an official statement from Pineapple Concerts:

Pineapple Concerts Sdn Bhd is pleased that Sunburst KL International Music Festival 2009 held on 21st March 2009 at Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club & Country Resort, was a tremendous success.

Contrary to media reports, we wish to emphasise that NO ARTISTS WERE DETAINED NOR THEIR PASSPORTS HELD by any agency or government body during their stay in Malaysia. Though discussions were held with relevant agencies, all matter were amicably resolved.

However, Pineapple Concerts hereby confirms that Milenda Events, the agency appointed by the company to manage all permits & licensing applications and submissions relating to Sunburst KL 2009, is now no longer contracted to, or in any way associated with all present and future Pineapple Concerts events, with immediate effect.

How can they call themselves Ministry of Unity, when the event was uniting the musical, racial, and religion divide.
How can the enforcement agencies showed their sharp teeth to those big artiste?
What positive ways can the government think of to make our citizens as dynamic as Singaporeans.

I think some disrespectful civil servants are trying to make Barisan Nasional lose the Federal government.

The Malaysian government should say and do more stupid stuff so that the international press have more things to talk about.

Just look at our political scene. Best stand up comedy I've seen in ages.

To what-la-u-all

Are they really doing their jobs?
The reason how this came about was because they rejected the permit applications because "the way the group members dressed was obscene".

Which planet are these people living in to have such ideas?

NERD was dressed in t-shirts and jeans on stage for goodness sake.

why did Melinda Events fail to get the permit?
i am aware that of some cases where if you fulfill all the standards or conditions to get certain permits you still need to ahem do something else?
