Four Christmases is a movie with a simple premise: a happily unmarried couple's family-ditching holiday tradition has been foiled by that ever-inflexible entity—bad weather. Kate, played by Reese Witherspoon, the queen of romantic comedy, and her antithetical counterpart Brad, played by Vince Vaughn, find themselves stuck at the San Francisco airport by a fogbank that cancels every outbound flight. Experts at the delicate art of familial circumvention, dodging awkward family get-togethers seems necessary to avoid the emotional turmoil of divorced parents, feuding siblings, out-of-control kids and all the underlying anxieties and simmering resentments that have been the hallmarks of every family Christmas. Caught on camera at the airport by a local news crew, Brad and Kate have run out of excuses and are expected home for Christmas by each of their parents but, a silver lining around their four ordeals gives them new perspectives on who they really are.
